CIRCA introduction

The Association of Canadian Industries Recycling Coal Ash (CIRCA) promotes the use of Coal Combustion Products (CCPs) in Canada to produce technically superior concrete products. CIRCA keeps vigil on the national and international scenes to keep Members on top of trends in legislation, regulation and specification that may have potential to limit the environmentally responsible and socially beneficial uses of CCPs.

Diversity is one of CIRCA’s strengths; with ash producers and marketers contributing to discussions and decision-making, and regular input from other industry representatives, participants get a broad perspective on the ash industry as a whole. This enables CIRCA to stay current with emerging issues and to develop coordinated positions and a united voice on those that may affect the use of CCPs.

Membership is open to Utilities with coal-fired generation, Marketers of coal combustion products (CCPs), Government & other agencies, Universities and other stakeholders. An Associate Member category offers individuals and small consulting companies the opportunity to participate in CIRCA activities. Benefits of Membership details the considerable advantages of CIRCA Membership.

CIRCA has made significant progress on initiatives to promote the use of CCPs in Canada:

* Published a series of Fact Sheets on Fly Ash and its Applications;
* Completed an educational Video Series for users and regulators, present and future, including contractors, architects, architectural specifiers, designers and engineers, students;
* Served on the SCM Advisory Committee to the National Action Plan on Climate Change;
* Awarded University engineering student teams for their successful demonstration of technical advantages of including fly ash in concrete mix designs.

Support for non-traditional applications that will expand the use of CCPs underpins CIRCA initiatives in process:
* University Civil Engineering Course on Traditional and Non-traditional Uses of CCPs;
* Design Competition for the Innovative Use of Supplementary Cementing Materials (SCMs).
